The reason why Troi was on the bridge all the timewas that she was a betazoid. The Klingon redesign was much more than a visual reboot and especially the tech aspects dont fit canon (holographic communication, Klingon cloaking, android bridge crew, easy terraforming, state-of-the-art nanotech, Enterprise battle squad). Should the nice girl get off your lawn? It feels the only reason was to have a non-binary character, which after a few episodes ended up fading into the background with the rest of the furniture anyway. That is why you never saw councelors on any other class ship. And I just let the writers take me on a journey. Took time to reset the franchise. Its all relative, but I dont see a lot of actors being body-shamed. Remember , they had steroids and thyroid problems in the 80's, but the majority of people were off normal weight, which today would be called skinny. Any accent would be acceptable for a time that hasnt happened yet. They should all try for the standards of randos on the internet like you I dont love her the way I love Saru or Pike, or Janeway or Seven or Picard or Spock. So I was also just very excited for the fans. advantage. And the only family she has is on that ship. And Books starshipthink of it as Star Treks answer to the Astro Megaship from Power Rangers in Space. Tilly is part Wesley Crusher and part Barclay. I would ask our family doctor, Is there anything you can give me thatll make me gain weight?'. Its could have (or couldve). It's mostly the super-hero genre where you see this. We need to examine our highest ideals and allegiances to reveal our preconceived notions, shallow knee-jerk reactions, and find the truth about our choices. To even suggest that is stupidity writ large. Where I live people compete on the merits and are proud of their professional or intellectual achievements not their bad habits, bad health or even born with attributes such as divergent sexual orientation that they had no influence over whatsoever. The moment they decided to incorporate a new character with basically the same characteristics (a young, socially awkward, but very smart ensign) they ruined Tilly. Disco has a lot of problems storywise But not her looks! I would not say it isnt a valid creative decision to try this approach, especially in an age where we are emphasizing the need for self-care, its just not to my taste. GD, what shoes is David wearing in those pics? Patrick Kwok-Choon is the only one of the bridge officers that doesnt have another regular acting or producer/director role. Take me to the stars and tell me a story. So I think Tilly definitely goes to employ those skills. Im sure nearly everyone of the crew of TNG had issues and problems. Just when it looks like the character has finally grown as a person and doing her own thing, comes right back. She strikes me as no different than Barkley. David Ajala: Legit, its still very palpable here. Barclay was another unrealistic character that never shouldve made it in to Starfleet. Its been a continuing book series since 2009 and still going. Or are you only a troll if you criticize something about Discovery? I dont think Tilly is ruined. She is super meta. Tilly is a wonderful incarnation of our inner geekdom, a person you would find at conventions or in fanfiction I love this character so much because she isnt perfect. I dont read the same type of criticism for their male actors. She brings so much heart to the show. There is a great scene back in S1 when Tilly and Burnham are doing cardio training and post workout are eating their protien, carbs and fat nutrition, something that the body requires after a hard cardio workout. Even 1,000 years into the future, Burham cannotoh well, that is a different story for a different post. She served aboard the USS Discovery while still a cadet in 2256, later commissioned as an ensign . Whether you choose to believe it or not, youre actually part of the problem. Release date: Star Trek Discovery season 4 will release on November 18 in the US. Ive learned a lot of bad spelling comes from dictating into your smartphone. And how and how would your abilities be used in the Mirror Universe? They seemed to only be limited by what that particular script called for that week. I found him quite annoying, myself. Every woman is very beautiful. There are characters you really cherish and others that are fun but ultimately nothing special. What accent? Im sorry youve had to experience that and I strongly urge you to take what comfort you can from whatever source you can, regardless of how other people feel about that source. https://t.co/zV56ClHoUZ, Kate Mulgrew (@TheKateMulgrew) December 18, 2020. Come on she looks great. Sick and tired of T and A being the main focus. In fact, thats all the Discovery crew is qualified as in the 32nd century. If you cant understand that message, then you are very much part of the problem. I recall when Trek featured a French captain with an English accent. And now, with only three years under her belt in the field, From future Starfleets POV, thats 900 years! Body shaming is just another category of bullying, with the same general goal of the shamer making him/herself feel superior by putting down others around them, rather than elevate him/herself with goodwill and compassion. You mentioned that the rest of world laughs at America because of obesity. Key difference in thinking, and it makes all the difference in the big picture! No it says a lot about the incredibly dangerous message she is sending. It is not others right to tell someone how their body should be that sort of thing was done with slaves. So it has been hard, and its really hard to avoid, because it pops up on all the [social media] accounts, or people comment on my posts with cruel, unscientific comments. Sonequa Martin-Green in Unification III, Co-showrunner Michelle Paradise shared some behind-the-scenes photos from Terra Firma, Part 2.. Did Tilly on Discovery gain weight? They told us and a handful of other outlets what to expect for their characters and more. The Relaunch Litverse books for DS9 are uneven in my reading experience as compared to the TNG and the Voyager books once Beyer took over. This was to reveal the true intents and emotions of the players in each plot, which highlights the role they play in momentous choices in high-stake situations. Thanks for the correction and yes that is correct. When a show blankets the airwaves with hugs and confessionals and cheering it tends to make any subtler moments stand out far less, but this is also not a subtle show to begin with. That could explain the weight gain. Tilly is the product of lazy writing and a lazy showrunner. Why do you think being nervous or anxious means that you can not graduate from the academy? Not Mary Wisemans fault; the writers fault. He was a cool character and one of the best things about season 3. Thank you, Trek Movie Staff, for sharing my interview with your readers and providing a link to Forbes.com! I agree with you on principle as far at this being fine on a fictional Star Trek show. I like Tilly but shes not my favourite character. No spoilers in case I ever decide to actually the write the thing, but youd love it as a DS9 fan. Even though she's still in the final season of Starfleet Aacademy studies She was assigned to the USS Discovery to get some practical experience. Just IMHO, because to each his (or her, or their) own! The 60s/70s are gone. For someone who is supposed to care about others, shes been remarkably stuck in her own emotions. Wiseman possess voluptuous hourglass shaped figure. Tilly is a Harry Kim, Wesley Crusher, Travis Mayweather sort of character at least for me. And CBS posted some images of Emperor Georgious quarters on the ISS Discovery. Shes not going anywhere. And yeah the Full Circle stories do sound a bit depressing especially since SPOILER ALERT they kill off Janeway in them! I truly do love this show, but Burnham and Tilly are so damn annoying. But because of Discovery we have Lower Decks, Picard, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, Short Treks, possibly Section 31 and the Academy show. I echo your sentiments exactly, David. Unless you want to count Ezri Dax she was a therapist but I dont believe she heald a high ranking command position. Its shall we say very variable. New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery premiere on Thursdays on CBS All Access in the U.S. and on CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada, where it's also available to stream on Crave. I think people need that kind of thing to heal. Would a woman watching this aspire to be a Tilly or aspire to be a Dax, Kira or Janeway? A statistical average does not justify shaming or ridiculing anyone. Plenty of curvy ladies are quite healthy and active. Michelle Yeoh, considerably smaller in physical stature, probably weighs around 90# [because she is allll muscle]. Tillys journey has helped me over the last few years. I dont believe any of the other series had a therapist on the bridge. Keep up with all the news and reviews from the newStar Trek Universe on TV at TrekMovie.com. Now if it turns out, Burnham was being influenced by an alien entity or she has been given insight into the future which made it imperative that she rush Tilly into becoming the Number One, then I can accept it. Please back up your statement. It would definitely be great if Rhys was promoted to first officer. Other ships having counselors in the TNG era was mentioned. Was that really a Betazoid characteristic or was she just reading faces and gestures? Imo, this show tries so overly hard to be socially progressive, its the very thing that makes it a turn-off. Seasons one through three are available to stream now on CBS All Access. Too nervous and anxious. Mary Wiseman: That experience affects her so much this season. Shes fantastic and looks fantastic doing it! Sigh all you like, but thats not going to magically make physics and biology work differently. Finally, actress Rekha Sharma shared this fun behind-the-scenes photo with Doug Jones and David Benjamin Tomlinson, where she lamented Landry being killed off yet again. :-), What, you mean you dont follow your patients around at work, giving suggestions? Shes magnetic. I think the character would have been much better served if Tillys quirks were something that changed as the character grew over the seasons. I wanted to be bigger and I spent much of my childhood, adolescence and even into my young adulthood doing all kinds of things to get bigger. She laughs at the memory. After the first two seasons of high pressure I thought I would have seen more growth. Its really just certain comments sections and Facebook garbage holes. Contents 1 Early life 2 Starfleet career 2.1 USS Discovery 2.1.1 The war 2.1.2 Post-war 2.1.3 32nd century 3 Personal relationships 3.1 Friendships For me, generally speaking, when Barclay or Trois mom appeared it signaled a terrible episode in advance. Gee, so some Trek fans can be @$$holes. My condolences to you, for your mum. The U.S.S. After all, it DOES seem as though Tilly is gone from the crew for the time being. Not with DSC, not with ANYTHING. Ill never forget when I, a woman of 160# at 58, healthy, deemed fit by military and bodyfat percentage indexes, approached the Credit Union one day, when the guy at the ATM finished his transaction, turned, saw me, and yelled Hey, fatass!. Wiseman had other things to do. I would prefer to finish the rest of Prodigy first season instead. This post (handouts bad habits yada yada yada) is your latest misogny, homophobia and white supremacy , and I am sick and tired of it. . Her body shape is fabulousshe is gorgeous. The writing for him is trying in season 1, but from Samaritan Snare onwards I actually think hes kinda endearing and has decent utility. Maybe its just me, but I dont really care about women or mens weight on TV shows, I dont care for negative comments on them by haters, but neither do I care for the actors/actresses making such a whiney big deal about it. I did, though. Someone with a lack of intelligence throws a race card at every debate. Good points. As long as the stories remain laser-focused on the *people* their *relationships* and the *emotions* generated therein, instead of ships, gadgets, and effects, well be fine. And tons dont. And for your own gain, right? You always come up with weird posts VS this one is weirder than usual Im afraid to say. Learning? If you read what Mary and Sonequa are saying, they arent promoting any particular body style or fitness choice, just that they are as they are and only they have the right to choose how that should be. David Ajala: I would be very dangerous. Neither she nor anyone else with common sense is celebrating obesity. Diplomacy? CBS/Paramount+ For Wiseman's Tilly, the danger and near-loss of all the cadets, including Adira (Blu del Barrio) forces her. I assume my feelings towards them are what Wesley-haters endure. And Tilly is the Trekkie. each series has traditionally had someone that acts as a way to explore the inner humanityie spock, data, odo, doc/seven. Why did they do that? Mary Wiseman: Right, when you use empathy for evil, its manipulation. Mary Wiseman is confirmed to return as Sylvia Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, although whether she rejoins the crew or continues at Starfleet Academy and only interjects occasionally remains unknown. Good for Mary! Sonequa is a great actress. I agree, in fairness Barclay was relatable in many ways, socially awkward but not too overplayed. Tilly is justannoying. Theyre losers, pure and simple. Shes a badly conceived written and conceived character theyve desperately tried to bolster. I keep reading that no character like hers should not be in starfleet, yet she is. In fact this is Discoverys success is showing human emotion as another frontier to cross because it is in fact the major component in value choices and decisions that are an unrecognized part of strategic and political decisions as per our many current political divides in US. All are Trek! Im a human being, you know? Well, Renos really more engineering. In the latest Star Trek: Discovery episode, Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman) was tasked with . Unity? Theres a difference between celebrating obesity and accepting individual human beings, treating them as human beings, and not targeting them specifically for emotional harassment. I love how Disco has put the human back into the human experience. [laughs] Everybody loves Tilly. And to have somebody step in and defend you is really meaningful. Her character Tilly is not my favorite on the show but body shaming is a shameful act by itself. Yes I forgot David Mack is a consultant on this show too and is well aware of all the post-Nemesis stories in the novels. Development for the fifth season of Discovery is well underway, with production expected to begin in June. But its at least nice they came to their senses with that ridiculous story turn (unlike Kirk). Its sci-fi, brah. That was an awfully fast turnaround. By: TrekMovie.com Staff Mary Wiseman Net Worth The net worth of Mary Wiseman has been estimated at $1 million. I think Mary is doing a fantastic job as isSonequa, Their characters are fantastic as are all the others. Overcome her issues. Mary Wiseman is a good actress but even with that, if Star Trek Discovery was shot in 80s or 90s producers would probably force her to go on a diet or even fire her. 108 comments so far. Thats undeniable. DSC had many issues at the beginning. Shaming is one thing. There are a lot of people in the comments hating, but in a franchise that includes Neelix, Wesley Crusher, Naomi Wildman, Kes, and Lwaxana Troi, Tilly is frankly nowhere near as annoying as those other characters. Can Picard go round the sun once more and rescue Saru from Discovery? Perhaps season four will address Burnham and Tillys unreadiness on more than an emotional level. People sit around a lot more nowadays for a lot of reasons. (But then she has always reminded me, her looks and bubbliness, of my cousin who just so happens to be a wonderful teacher. In fact most of their fears and phobias were explored in various episodes. She hasnt mentored anyone except in one episode. I feel bad saying this but Ive never a read a Star Trek novel in my life lol. That is definitely not a true statement. That promise was fulfilled in last weeks season finale, and Wiseman is talking about her return. Sad but true, yet we always opt to genuflect in the direction of the elephant. SuKal accidentally blowing up all warp ships thats another instance of Trek being intwined with my own life So you offend S3 of DSC, you also sully the memory of my mum and EVERY mother that ever died. We use cookies to ensure that we give you the best experience on our website. And another way to look at it: at least its not another hour of tv taken by a reality show, right? In fact, at least on this website, I often see the contrary. David Ajala: The first thing that comes to mind, is maybe hes a borderline narcissist, vry egotistical, and self-absorbed. ;). Troi made explicit the evil intent lies we tell each other and ourselves to gain selfish material and political advantage. Like damn the guy's 90 ffs give him a break. What do you mean? When I was around 12 I used to eat peanut butter and drink Ensure, a meal replacement drink, before I went to sleep. I like the way you think! Discovery may have just said goodbye to one of its crew, but don't worry: She'll be back. I always have to correct it, so its not terribly efficient. In her interview with TrekMovie last week, Discovery co-showrunner Michelle Paradise echoed these sentiments: Well never be done with Tilly. It is not OK to be overweight. It was EXACTLY what I needed while mourning my own mother. As far as science fiction most Trek shows have normal looking ppl. The burden is now on SNWThat show can either make or break it with regards to these issues. At New York Comic Con, TrekMovie participated in some group interviews with members of the cast and crew, one of which was with the pair-up of Mary Wiseman (Tilly) and David Ajala (Book). Smart doesnt mean competent. American actress Mary Wiseman payed several smaller roles in the past but recently gained a big recognition as Cadet Sylvia Tilly in new iteration of Star Trek franchise called Star trek: Discovery. We never saw her effort to become that person. And I agree wholeheartedly. Its very likely shell be on the Star Fleet Academy show if she continues as a regular/recurring character on a Trek show. Weight Gain Explained Rumors are going on that Mary Wiseman is pregnant and she has gained weight. While Im excited to get back to the 32nd century and see whats changed since season 3 Im still not excited for the season itself. Ok, SH didnt invent this. Wiseman was appreciative of fans who had her back online: I just want to say that all the people who step in, to back me up like that, your presence is like little angels, like blocking out these little trolls. Just like every other character in a show that generally is badly written. But I think one of the things that leaves everyone feeling unmoored in this situation is they dont even know how to use their skills to deal with this because its something theyve never seen before, and they cant predict it, they dont know by which rules its operating, and how to even engage. Star Trek: Discovery threw a shocker into its latest episode as Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly decided to leave the Discovery crew. Editor's note, 23 Dec 2020: If you like Wiseman's interview here, then you should also check out interviewer Dawn Ennis's other work. Its one thing thats definitely been improved upon by the more recent stuff. So, although he does the occasional guest star role in other shows produced in Canada, he could take on a larger role on Discovery. Most of what she did was convey the amazingly obvious like offering such useful insights such as, Hes concealing something but I dont know what. And her abilities were never fully defined. I think Mary is amazingly pretty and has absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of her figure. The only writers they need are people who can polish it up enough so that you cant tell its machine-written. I think the ship can handle a little chonk. Anyway, another Discovery-ism, amongst the many other weird decisions on this show. She was annoying to me, and the crew gave her a lot of leeway. So when very capable people feel un-capable, crazy things happen. To be honest I think she is more attractive than the mostly skinny cast of most series. That could be it. Bad writing, illogical story arcs, unbalanced tempo, underdeveloped characters or sudden jumps in character development. Funny enough, I have never had a problem with Wesley. Everybody does NOT love Tilly. Probably some admirals cousin. I think others that make such claims are having their own feel feels hurt or nostalgia rattled. If you cant deal with the idea of conflicting opinions then I really dont think you should be online at the moment. For what its worth Picard has an excellent cast, male and female, it just feels they are one or two notches above their discovery peers, maybe again due to writing/direction. Then maybe I would actually remember his name!
